Vaak wordt in de agogiek gebruik gemaakt van bedrijfspsychologische modellen, maar voor de agogiek van de kunst blijken die weinig bruikbaar. Ze bieden geen basis voor de filosofische grondslagen waarop zon agogiek kan gegrondvest worden. Stefan Hertmans plaatst de zoektocht naar die grondslagen centraal in dit boek. Kunst heet steevast een subjectieve materie te zijn, maar kunstenaars, critici, docenten en studenten worden wel verondersteld te weten waarover ze spreken. De spanning tussen praktijk en theorie is dan ook een vast gegeven in elke kunstopleiding, en ze doortrekt ook de kunstkritiek, het sociale vertoog en zelfs de politieke vertogen over haar functie en nut. Nochtans communiceert het kunstwerk niet bepaald eenduidig over wat het bevat en waarnaar het wil verwijzen; het lijkt op communicatief niveau zelfs om moeilijkheden te vragen. Volgens de Franse filosoof Jean-François Lyotard is kunst quelque chose comme communication... sans communication. Dat definieert de uitdaging waarop dit boek wil ingaan. Hertmans laat zich bij zijn zoektocht naar grondslagen voor een kunstagogiek inspireren door de belangrijkste denkers van de afgelopen eeuw. Op die manier werpt het boek ook een vaak verrassend licht op wat grote denkers over de kunst te melden hadden. Daardoor is deze als handboek opgevatte studie ook een onmisbare leidraad voor al wie geïnteresseerd is in het actuele denken over kunst en communicatie.

Stefan Hertmans (1951) behoort tot de belangrijkste Vlaamse auteurs van dit ogenblik. Voor zijn literair werk kreeg hij tal van prijzen en onderscheidingen, zoals de Multatuliprijs, de Arkprijs van het vrije Woord, de Prijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap en de Bordewijkprijs.

Class does make a difference in the lives and futures of American children. Drawing on in-depth observations of black and white middle-class, working-class, and poor families, Unequal Childhoods explores this fact, offering a picture of childhood today. Here are the frenetic families managing their children's hectic schedules of "leisure" activities; and here are families with plenty of time but little economic security. Lareau shows how middle-class parents, whether black or white, engage in a process of "concerted cultivation" designed to draw out children's talents and skills, while working-class and poor families rely on "the accomplishment of natural growth," in which a child's development unfolds spontaneously-as long as basic comfort, food, and shelter are provided. Each of these approaches to childrearing brings its own benefits and its own drawbacks. In identifying and analyzing differences between the two, Lareau demonstrates the power, and limits, of social class in shaping the lives of America's children. The first edition of Unequal Childhoods was an instant classic, portraying in riveting detail the unexpected ways in which social class influences parenting in white and African American families. A decade later, Annette Lareau has revisited the same families and interviewed the original subjects to examine the impact of social class in the transition to adulthood.

Le présent ouvrage réunit la plupart des contributions qui ont été présentées lors des journées de formation en criminologie organisées les 27 et 28 avril 1989 par l'École de criminologie de l'Université catholique de Louvain et la Faculté de droit des Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis. L'objectif premier est d'éclairer une problématique à la fois complexe, peu connue et d'une grande actualité dans le cadre de la protection de la jeunesse : le placement des mineurs en institution psychiatrique ouverte et fermée. Quatre questions sont abordées. Quelles sont les différentes voies juridiques permettant un tel placement ? Quelle est la nature et la fonction des interventions psychologiques et psychia­triques au niveau judiciaire ? Quelles sont les institutions qui ac­cueillent les mineurs ? Comment concilier traitement psychiatrique et droits de l'homme ? Sur chacun de ces thèmes, se trouvent confrontés les points de vue du théoricien et du praticien, ceux du juriste, du psychologue et du psychiatre.

Politieke spotprenten zijn een aparte vorm van journalistiek. Zoals columns geven ze commentaar bij de actualiteit. Maar door hun beeldtaal en vaak ook hun eenvoud zijn ze directer. In dit werk worden 50 grote thema's uit de Belgische geschiedenis geïllustreerd aan de hand van een weloverwogen selectie van meer dan 400 spotprenten. Telkens gesitueerd in hun historische context. Samen met vlotte syntheseteksten en tijdbalken vertellen de vele cartoons het verhaal van België. Van de onafhankelijkheid tot de globalisering, van het unitaire naar het federale België, van partijvorming tot politieke schandalen. Het resultaat is een originele en eigenzinnige kijk op de geschiedenis van België met een dwingend engagement voor de lezer om te kijken, te zien en te begrijpen
